Show someone the word REDRED and ask the ink color, and they hesitate — reading fires automatically before color naming can answer. That hesitation is the Stroop effect, first documented by John Ridley Stroop in 1935 and replicated thousands of times since; it's a staple of psychology research and cognitive testing because it cleanly exposes the conflict between automatic and controlled processing. This stroop task test runs two blocks of twelve trials: congruent (word and ink match) and incongruent (they conflict).
