How butterfly clicking works

Instead of one finger pressing repeatedly, two fingers (usually index and middle) alternate on the same button — while one is releasing, the other is pressing, roughly doubling the rate a single finger could sustain alone. It takes coordination to keep both fingers landing squarely on the button without slipping off.

How your CPS is calculated

CPS = total clicks ÷ time in seconds. For example, 65 clicks in a 5-second run gives 65 ÷ 5 = 13 CPS.

12–16Good — clear advantage over single-finger
16+Excellent — highly practiced technique

Tips to improve

  • Keep both fingers curled the same way so they land in the same spot each time
  • Start slower and build rhythm before pushing for maximum speed
  • Test the 30-second mode to see whether your technique holds up over time

Frequently asked questions

What is butterfly clicking?

Butterfly clicking is a technique where you use two fingers alternating rapidly on the same mouse button, roughly doubling the click rate of normal single-finger clicking.

What is a good butterfly click CPS?

A good butterfly click score is 12-16+ CPS. Because two fingers share the load, sustained rates are often higher than jitter clicking, though both rely on practiced technique.

Does butterfly clicking damage your mouse?

It can — the rapid double-tapping stresses the mouse switch more than normal clicking, and some competitive scenes restrict or ban it for that reason, alongside fairness concerns.

Is butterfly clicking allowed in games?

It varies by game and server. Some competitive Minecraft servers restrict butterfly clicking specifically (unlike jitter clicking) because the double-contact can register unintended extra hits — check the specific server’s rules.

Butterfly clicking vs jitter clicking — which is faster?

Both can reach similarly high CPS, but they fatigue differently: butterfly clicking shares load across two fingers so it often sustains better over 30-60 seconds, while jitter clicking can feel faster in short bursts.
